Short Abstract
:
The traditional liquor ‘Chyang’ plays an important role in the social and cultural life of the Sherpa people. Through this study, an attempt has been made to understand the traditional practice of consumption of liquor ‘Chyang’ and examine the various social and cultural trends prevalent among the Sherpa mothers during postnatal period.
Long Abstract
:

From time immemorial traditional liquor has been prepared and widely used in various cultures. The ‘Chyang’ is a popular traditional liquor and plays an important role in the social and cultural life of the Sherpa people. Through this study, an attempt has been made to understand the traditional liquor ‘Chyang’, which plays the vital part in the Sherpa culture and examine the various social and cultural trends prevalent among the Sherpa tribe regarding Maternal healthcare. Maternal health refers to the health and wellness of women during pregnancy, at the time of childbirth and in the postnatal period. Yet, more extensive studies are required to understand the impact of traditional liquor on maternal health as some of the transformations occurred in many of their practices. In general, the significant perspective of the present study is to understand the traditional practice of consumption of traditional liquor by the Sherpa women especially after childbirth inhabiting in the area of Darjeeling district, West Bengal.
