Long Abstract
:

It is known that in various states of Mexico and other countries, the Masonic workshops of the Chee Kung Tong (CKT) were consolidated by being supported by the Chinese secret societies. In this presentation, we will see the creation and functions that this workshop had with migrants of Chinese origin in the State of San Luis Potosí, Mexico. We will present the results of a work in the historical archives of the CKT of the Masonic Lodge of the Grand Lodge El Potosí, in the State of San Luis Potosí, Mexico; of the books on foreigners (1925 - 1950), of the interviews with the descendants of the members of the CKT, as well as the consultation of their family archives and newspaper sources. Thus, this paper will analyze the social integration strategies that the Cantonese set up within the CKT workshop and in their public life, will present how they achieved a successful settlement in San Luis Potosí (unlike other regions of the country), and will reflect on their current social integration. Likewise, we will review other factors that influenced the settlement of Chinese migrants and the formation of the CKT in San Luis Potosí around 1925. One of them is the increase in the persecution of Asians in the north of the country, as well as the formation of anti-Chinese leagues. In addition, the national request for the registration of all foreigners residing in Mexico in the foreigners book, which made them feel vulnerable as they were cataloged with their personal data. In this way, the consolidation of the Cantonese Masonic group protected them as a community, they generated sociability and economic networks, managing to be part of Potosi society, by marrying local women.
