The Religious Continuity of Worshipping: Chinese Women’s Folk Belief Practices During the Covid-19 Pandemic

:
The research provides insight into the specialty of the role of females in regard to religious performance during the pandemic. Investigating the changes in varieties of offerings during the worshipping rites provides a possibility to analyze the evolution of folk belief patterns across different generations of Chaoshan women, identify the performance logic of their folk belief, and discuss the impact of folk belief of Chaoshan region.
Long Abstract
:

This research aims to sort out the performance patterns of the folk belief of Chinese females during the times of covid-19 pandemic, based on the research in the Chaoshan area, which is located in the southern part of China and also one of the areas that most admire the culture of worshiping divinities. The content involves both family contexts and religious activities, as well as the continuity of the region’s worshipping culture. Thereby, the evolution across generations of how the Chaoshan women prepare the rites and offerings can be revealed. And their self-awareness among the worshipping can be summarized. Chaoshan women have played a substantial role in the folk religious activities of the Chaoshan region, acting as selfless service providers for the sake of their families. The research provides insight into the specialty of the role of females regarding religious performance. Investigating the changes in varieties of offerings during the worshipping rites provides a possibility to analyze the evolution of folk belief patterns across different generations of Chaoshan women, identify the performance logic of their folk belief, and discuss in general the transformation of folk belief of Chaoshan region. In addition to that, tracking the simplification process of the worshipping rites to discuss the impact of the pandemic, opens a door to rethink the continuity of folk religious activities.
