Abstract Title
:
DIGITAL THERAPY FOR MENTAL HEALTH: AN ATTEMPT TO SELF-DEVELOPMENT IN THE NEOLIBERAL AGE
Short Abstract
:
Since 2017, more than 10,000 apps aimed at mental health care are available for use on smartphones (TOROUS, ROBERTS; 2017). In Brazil, CĂngulo Terapia Guiada has more than 1 million downloads. I emphasize that the search for people interested in investing in their self-care may reflect the neoliberal phenomenon of the subject interested in self-development (DARDOT, LAVAL; 2016). But I suspect that Cingulo, maybe, is just only a product of capitalist society.
Long Abstract
:

Since 2017, more than 10,000 applications aimed at mental health care are available for use on smartphones (TOROUS, ROBERTS; 2017). In Brazil, according to the Play Store, Cíngulo Terapia Guiada has more than 1 million downloads.

Founded in 2018 by psychiatrists and doctors in neurosciences, it was considered the best app for mental health care in 2019, receiving awards: from Google for its personal development work.

With regard to the economic character, initially, the application had 2.005,33 dollars. Currently, since January 10, 2022, it has a share capital of 1.307.477,89 dollars. Therefore, through the numbers, it is possible to perceive that the growth of the company's value expresses its melody in the segment of digital therapy. In addition, the search for people interested in investing in their self-care may reflect the neoliberal phenomenon of the subject interested in self-development – ??as indicated (DARDOT, LAVAL; 2016). I suppose that cyberculture is the reason why people accept and use new technologies, offered by the market. Brazilians are more and more active on their smartphones. So due to it, based on the habitus conception (BOURDIEU, 1998), I defend that cultural practices, over time, are understood as natural actions.

Therefore, I chose it as my object of study. And from exploratory research, using digital ethnography and interviews, I try to interpret the relationship between users and the application-oriented algorithmic performance. While they expect to get good services, I suspect this Mhealth may be only another product of capitalist society aimed at surveillance capitalism (ZUBOFF; 2015). Therefore, I argue that it needs to be investigated and problematized in order to foster discussions relevant to Anthropology, that there are maybe still be covered by the fog of constant technological changes.
