Short Abstract
:
The age old, popular folk dance namely Chhau is presently performed in different festival cycle in West Bengal. The mask makers of Chhau in Purulia is considered in the present study for their survival and revival strategies as viewed by the present researcher through the participant observation with special emphasis on anthropological case studies too.
Long Abstract
:

India is a country with rich and various traditions and vibrant customs or culture. Every corner of India has various approaches to safeguard those social custom, including arts, musics and dance forms. The Chhau dance of Purulia, West Bengal is one of the popular folk arts. The Masks of Chhau are the vital as well as part and parcel of the dance. The village of, namely Charida in Purulia is popularly considered to be the hub of the dance form and has been labelled as “Mukhosh Gram”(the Village of Masks) as it is the abodes of the mask of the Chhau. In Charida generation of families have been involved in making dramatic Chhau masks and performing the Chhau. The mask form include various Hindu gods and goddesses, various animal, tribal men and women’s face etc. But now days according to the demands of masks, they make another dance masks like “Kathakali”, tribal families life style, dancing lady etc. Basically the Sutradhaar’s family make masks and Mahato's family performs dance. Extensively growth of tourism and impact of globalization, their lives have changed. Therefore, as the masks and allied elements and the dance form of Chhau being both the tangible and intangible heritage of the folk culture of West Bengal. Bears a special attention to the cultural anthropologist. In order to maintain its sustainability in terms of age old folk art economy, tourism and the community’s survival and identity the anthropologist should have to take an initiative for Proposing a strategy, planning through their Ethnographies.
