Land acquisition for industrial purpose, leads to displacement of people, without proper planning on resettlement and rehabilitation. People experience homelessness, joblessness, helplessness and powerlessness. This paper focuses to study the changes and consequences in the lifestyle of the indigenous people due to displacement and resettlement. The effects of displacement are of multifarious and dispossess the affected persons of their employment, home and security.
Long Abstract
:

Displacement has become a serious issue across the globe. Millions of people have been forcibly displaced from their native place by various reasons since independence in India. Acquisition of land, for industrial development purposes often leads to displacement and resettlement of the original inhabitants. People from their place of origin have to move to a new place which not only creates problem to their economic life but also disturbs their social life. Displaced people lose their land and other productive assets such as traditional occupation and housing. The industrial development projects keep their priority to the economic development only; very less attention to the life of the displaced people. Dislocation breaks up living patterns and social continuity. It breaks the existing modes of production and disrupts the social networks. Displacement causes deprivation. It threatens the cultural identity of a population. Apart from this, displacement also causes other traumatic and psychological consequences that make people’s life more miserable. Thus with the aim to study the changes and consequences that displace people faced, the current paper focus to study on the effects of development projects on people’s lifestyle and livelihood. For this purpose, the village Dainijan of Dibrugarh district, Assam has been purposively selected where displaced people are relocated due to the establishment of Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL), a Polymer industry, in Lepetkata,  Dibrugarh ( a district in Upper Assam, India). The impact of establishment of BCPL in Lepetkata has made the indegineous people leave their own native land and move to another area, thus settled down permanently. The study is based on both primary source which include interview method and secondary source of data are collected from journals and books. This displacement and relocation have transformed people’s life socially, culturally and economically.
