They are moving on mountain trails from time immemorial and are acquainted with various wild medicinal plants. Gaddis claimed themselves as a self-sufficient tribe.
Long Abstract
:

Gaddis is a well-known migratory tribe of the Himalayas. They are found on either side of the Dhaula Dhar ranges of Himachal Pradesh, in Chamba and Kangra districts.  Their seasonal migration follows the migratory trend of Lord Shiva. They move vertically, in summers, they move to an alpine pasture of Lahaul, and in winters they take turns towards the border areas of Himachal Pradesh. Gaddis pay grazing tax to the Forest Department of Himachal Pradesh in summer pastures and in winter the rent is paid for the ban (forest) to the Panchayat of respective areas. A total of 40 pastoralists from both districts were interviewed and information was gathered regarding their occupation and the challenges they face in changing times. Data was collected from the officials of the Animal Husbandry Department, Veterinary hospitals, and Forest Department from both districts and their views on Gaddis pastoralists were noted. Along with the rest of the world, globalization has also impacted the lives of Gaddis tribes. Although the community is facing a decline in traditional practices and has more inclination towards other occupations and a sedentary way of life. Out of 40 pastoralists, 31 did not want their next generation to follow the traditional occupation due to increasing tension in pasture land and restrictions by Forest Department.
