Abstract

Occupational change has been understood largely as a change in the activity of the members of a society to earn their livelihood. The change is observed in terms of change in the distribution of these activities in the socio-economic structure of the society. The Bhumij community is the second largest community in the Bankura District and all over the West Bengal state. Generally, the Bhumij community is following the traditional occupation for the last few generations. The present study is tried to find out their mean occupation and how much change the occupation in the present situation. For the present study, data were collected from Hirbandh and Ranibandh Block in the Bankura district. A total of 450 individual data were collected. A purposive sampling method was used to select the participants. Schedule and interview methods were applied to collect data on their present occupational activity and income source. Currently, according to the study, it is seen that, although they are dependent on most of the livelihoods shown by their elders, still, in order to keep pace with the times, most of the young generation joins the work of various mill factories or construction labor in different parts of the country. Studies on this topic are scanty most importantly in various tribal communities that are in a more vulnerable position than the non-tribal population. We need to conduct more such studies in the tribal population to properly comprehend the situation only after that solution would be possible.
