Understanding ‘Sloks’ as Intangible Heritage: A study of Koch Rajbangshis of Western Assam.
Short Abstract
:
Assam since ancient times has been a home to different communities and tribes which makes it a hub of rich culture and traditions. The Koch Rajbangshis are one of the major communities of Assam having their own distinct culture and language adding more beauty to the diversity of Assam. Cultural heritage means the way of life that is developed by a community and that has been passed on to generations. Cultural heritage is also categorized as tangible and intangible culture. Tangible cultural heritage means those facets that cannot be seen or touched such as verbal arts, expressions, values, social practices, music, etc. Tangible cultural heritage means those facets that can be touched or seen such as monuments, shrines, monasteries, etc. Verbal arts play a major role in developing communication and preserving the values of a society. Proverbs express the values and moral teachings of a society in an ornamental way. This paper will study the proverbs of the Koch Rajbangshi community of Assam with a special focus on the districts of (Bongaigaon, Dhubri, and Kokrajhar) and try to understand and interpret the community with the help of the proverbs.
