Abstract Title
:
Dowry Abuse - A little understood form of economic and financial abuse in Australia
Short Abstract
:
Emerging literature within Australia has drawn attention to how dowry abuse is an issue of concern within some communities in Australia, and has highlighted how such abuse constitutes a form of economic and financial abuse against women and their families. Despite this, dowry abuse remains poorly understood by many systems and services within the Australian context.
Long Abstract
:

Drawing on findings from a qualitative study on perceptions and experiences of dowry and dowry abuse of women from Indian communities in Australia, we highlight how this lack of understanding limits the development and provision of culturally appropriate services and responses for victim-survivors of dowry abuse. For victim-survivors who are newly arrived migrants, access to appropriate support may also be complicated by the fact that they may have limited awareness of their rights in Australia and of available support services that can assist them. The implications of these findings, including the need to develop culturally-sensitive and tailored responses to dowry abuse in Australia, and address barriers to accessing service provision, will be discussed.
