Long Abstract
:

Non-communicable diseases are one of the new healthcare challenges to marginalized communities.  Apart from providing a burden in terms of mortality, these diseases also pose a heavy financial burden to the people. In order to understand the social, cultural, and economic barriers to seeking health care for non-communicable diseases, the study explores the prevalence and economic burden of two common and important non-communicable diseases - Hypertension and Diabetes among tribes in Andhra Pradesh. Secondary and primary data are used for the analysis. Quantitative measures are used to understand these non-communicable diseases' prevalence and economic burden. NSSO's 75th  round of data on health is used to understand the prevalence and the economic burden. The economic burden is calculated through the methods of catastrophic health expenditure and impoverishment. Qualitative methods are used to understand the cultural factors contributing to the disease's prevalence and economic burden. Ethnographic fieldwork is conducted among Kolam and Gonds tribes in Andhra Pradesh. The study shows that there is a rising trend in the incidence of hypertension and diabetes among the tribal population, and one of the key factors is the change in lifestyle among the groups. Health-seeking behavior also explains the reasons for the economic burden among the tribal people. Understanding the prevalence, economic burden, and its factors helps to understand how to address the barriers to accessing affordable health care among the tribes.
