Transforming Mental Health in Communities
Short Abstract
:
Community mental health involves systems, structures that disempower, stigmatise and other people with mental illnesses. In this background, this paper will examine and narrate the experiences of authors in delivery a community mental health program in a local slum in Mumbai, which also includes a monthly community clinic using the Conscious Full Spectrum Response Model, developed by Monica Sharma.
Long Abstract
:

Community mental health has long gained siginificance as a robust way of fostering mental health and wellbeing. Drawing upon the definition of mental health given by WHO, the components of mental health are used as key indices based on which mental health services are offered. The social determinants of mental health clearly articulate the role of disempowering systems, structures and cultural norms that add to the stigma of mental illnesses. The authors will share their experiences of working with a low income community in a slum which has the lowest Human Development Index in Mumbai. The paper will present the foundational design model that was used to initiate the service, namely the Conscious Full Spectrum Response (CFSR) model and their experiences of implementing the services using a muti-perspective, multiple stakeholder approach.  The underpinning and fundamental universal values are source to not only design this intervention while challenging unworkable norms and structures, but also design strategies that generates sustainable and equitable results. This is the crux of the CFSR model, developed by Monica Sharma in 2017.  The CFSR model is a theme agnostic developmental model that has potential to challenge conventional ways of being and doing to foster leadership in every individual to design for wellbeing and full potential of all stakeholders.  The paper will present the lessons learnt from the use of this model while tracking interventions with multiple stakeholders. The interventions are stakeholder driven and thus their agency is fostered to co-create a world of justice and peace.
