Choice is an emergent buzzword defining schooling and its processes in India today. In choice context, schooling becomes a deeply competitive field and a site of reproducing social inequalities. India’s small towns like Alwar have witnessed a mushrooming of diverse types of private schools catering to various social groups. Market model of educating a child is gradually becoming a pervasive social reality in India and its urban centers. This paper is an attempt to understand the emerging landscape of school choice discourse and its implications in a small town context in India.

Choice is an emergent buzzword defining schooling and its processes in India today. In choice context, schooling becomes a deeply competitive field and a site of reproducing social inequalities. School Choice is embedded in the materiality of one’s everyday social world. Decisions are often made in a compelling environment laced with numerous consequences and uncertainties. India’s small towns like Alwar have witnessed a mushrooming of diverse types of private schools catering to various social groups. Parents have no choice but to choose, take decisions and experience the consequences whatsoever. Market model of educating a child is gradually becoming a pervasive social reality. This paper is an attempt to understand the emerging landscape of school choice discourse and its implications in a small town context in India.
