Abstract Title
:
Changing Livelihood Practices among the Hiras of Assam
Short Abstract
:
Livelihood can be understood in simple terms as the way of acquiring the ‘means of living’. It is a process that explores the relation between people and their environment both natural and social and how they manipulate it to achieve the means. The Hira community- one of the 16 Scheduled castes of Assam are traditionally known for their hand made pottery. Their primary source of livelihood was derived from earthen pot making where the women folk played the major role. But with changing times most of them have shifted to other forms of options to acquire their livelihood, which has led to loss of an indigenous craft in these areas. The world has become a global village and with new inventions and technologies the need and wants of people have changed tremendously. Earthen made items have become limited to just occasional use in ceremonies and special occasions. The scarcity of the “hira mati” , which has been traditionally used to make the pottery has also led to opting out for other modes of earnings. The present study focuses on exploring the new livelihood opportunities available to the Hiras of Maroi of Darrang District of Assam and how changing social scenario in the era of globalised world is impacting their choices.
Long Abstract
:

Livelihood studies gained immense popularity during the late 1990s when the sustainable livelihood framework came into picture.   For anthropologist Sandra Wallman,  livelihood is an umbrella term that includes the entire gamut of people and resources and what people do with them. Various factors are associated with livelihood practices. Various determinants of livelihood includes the birth of the individual (the caste, gender), social, economic and ecological environment in which they find themselves. The natural environment and its restriction , the restrictions related to social organisations and institutions also affect the modes of livelihood. Livelihood involves entering onto social relationship with other people- relatives, friends, strangers and this social relationship are based on kinship, ethnicity, religion, class. Maurice Godelier in his book , The Mental and the Material explores the relation between thought, economy and society , and the respective weight of mental (cultural) and material (natural) aspects in production of social relations.

Objectives of the study

  1. To understand the role of environment in choosing livelihood.
  2. To analyse the change in the practices and various factors related to the change.
  3. How globalisation affects traditional mode of livelihood
  4. Alternate livelihood practices available to them.

Relevance of the Study

The study will help in understanding the age old practice of hand made pottery  and the socio economic conditions of the Hira Community. It will take into consideration the affect of education, new livelihood opportunities and the changing social and physical environment around them. The paper will also address the role of caste that still determines the socio economic conditions and how society plays a major role in taking up modes of earning livelihood.
