Abstract Title
:
Understanding the role of urban green spaces in human health and well-being, in Delhi
Short Abstract
:
The relationship between humans and nature created by Urban Green Spaces not only benefits humans in terms of health and well-being but also helps to reduce various types of pollution. This study attempts to study the tree diversity of parks and connects it with the health and well-being of visitors using ecological and ethnographic methods. The results indicate that the visitors perceive the park as an avenue for improving their health and well-being.
Long Abstract
:

Urban Green Spaces act as one of the major recreational as well as healing mechanisms for various health issues. Health and well-being in urban areas, particularly in Delhi are the results of various factors. Government and different non-governmental agencies are bringing different approaches to reduce the risk related to health hazards of various kinds. Urban Greens with various tree species as their major constituent enable us to easily connect with nature. The nature and human relationship created by urban parks not only create recreational and mental well-being but also acts as a major stimulant in reducing soil toxicity, retaining groundwater level, and controlling air and noise pollution. The present paper is an attempt to understand the greenness of urban parks through a tree diversity study and to relate it to people’s health and well-being who can access these parks. In this study, five parks (four known as landmark greens, and one known as district parks) have been selected. The selection of the landmark greens was based on the criteria such as area, green cover, age, and socioeconomic characteristics of the neighborhood. The fifth park is considered a control park to compare and contrast the idea of landmark greens and their purposes. Ethnographic and ecological methods are used such as quadrat sampling, calculation of diversity indices, and semi-structured questionnaires for the perception survey of the visitors The result indicates that the visitors prefer to visit the green space majorly for stress relief, relaxation, and fresh air. Visitors use the park as an avenue for relieving stress from the urban lifestyle which enhances quality of life hence, improves health and well-being. It has also been observed that the age (historical significance) of the park and the gender of the visitor play an important role in the accessibility of the park.
