Long Abstract
:

My paper reflects on the findings of my present research project on the Buksa Scheduled Tribe community of Himalayan Tarai and their study in relation to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) status. The paper reflects upon the historicity of Tribes and their present distribution in relation to changing demography of Himalayan Tarai. The colonial documents and their role in construction of identity of tribes shall be analysed while keeping their present day politics of belonging. It is observed that the community is still in the process of ethnogenesis and identity carving. The recent revival of tribal history through community initiated activity will be analysed where social memory is being invoked, affirmed and historicized invariably. Then there are several false claims of being Buxa from around 45 districts of Uttar Pradesh. The classification of the Buksa tribe as PVTG is being evaluated within the ambit of government criteria. The Buxa proper are ignorant of special provisions as PVTG and they have largely been unable to seek benefits under its provisions.
