THE PLIGHT OF BASOHLI ARTISANS :- A STUDY OF MARGINAL COMMUNITY IN JAMMU REGION.
Short Abstract
:
The Basohli Art is a cultural heriatge of Jammu region. This art form integrates with the histroy , cultural life , nature, romance, folk reign, organic relations in society and aesthetics sense of the local community. This art is worldwide famous but because of several reasons this art have started declining. The artisans who have been doing this art form have also started leaving this art because they are not able to fullfill their daily needs. In traditional Painting , one cane see the purity or originality and authencity of the raw material used, which is not easy for the artisans to afford in modern times because of lack of resources. For the handfull of artisans it can not be possible for them to continue this traditonal art as it was used to be and they are facing many chanllenges to uplift or promotes this indegenious art.
Long Abstract
:

The world famous Basohli miniature Art is the cultural representation , cultural identity and cultural heriatge of Basohli, a small mountainous town of Jammu region in Jammu-Kashmir. The earliest center of Painting in the Pahari region was Basohli where under the patronage of Raja Kirpal Pal, an artisna named Devi Das executed miniatures in the form of Rasmanjari illustartions in 1694. The Basohli Paintings are made to mainatin the histroy and identity of the Basohli' cultural life.This art came back after a long gap of 150-200 years after the independence and it  needs to be revived in order to mainatin the we feeling of the  local community .The artisans are facing lot of problems as this art  hardly generates income for their  livelihoods.  Because this art is dying or degraded , the artisans are not getting much recognition or income or profit and very few artisans have left to do this art form .The present paper is based on the difficultites and chanllenges faced by the Artisans who are doing this traditional art from. Since Basohli art is a matter of local, national and international imporatnce but unfortuantely this art is dying with the passage of time. with the diminshing of this art form, the artisans have been loosing all hopes for their sustainable present as well as better future as there is not enough scope of livelihoods from this art from. The study  try to explore the efforts that been made by the local artisans to re-invent this  art from in contemporary times and with what purpose.This paper  highlight the grivenaces of the Artisans and the problems and  chanllenges faced by them. In addition to that, this paper try to focus the role of government and local leadership  to promotes this art as well as artisans.
